The special design bureau of the Kovrov Mechanical Plant developed the AEK-919 Kashtan compact submachine gun, chambered for the standard 9x18 PM pistol round, in the early 1990s. The project was supervised by leading designer P. Sedov. A shorter model, designated AEK-919K, followed after a number of improvement. The submachine gun has seen repeated refinements from then on.
The bore of the AEK-919K submachine gun features polygonal rifling. The weapon is blowback-operated. In its extreme rear position the bolt telescopes over the barrel by about one third of its length, the magazine is inserted into the pistol grip, i. e. the weapons features a pistol layout. The quite long mainspring with a great number of coils is accommodated above the barrel.
The trigger assembly is a separate unit. It ensures single-shot and automatic fire. The safety/fire selector Sever is mounted on the left side of the receiver above the trigger. The submachine gun fires from the rear sear. A shot is fires when the firing pin hits the cap. The fact that the weapon fires from the recovering bolt and the availability of the recoil buffer facilitate stability and reduce the recoil. Spent cases are extracted from the chamber by a spnng-loaded extractor and ejected by a rod cartridge ejector, mounted on the damper below the mainspring guide.
The non-reciprocating cocking handle is located on the left side of the receiver.
The submachine gun is fed from 20-round or 30-round detachable box magazines. Inserting the magazine onto the pistol grip makes magazine replacement faster.
The flip-type notch rear sight is graduated at 60 and 100 m.
The pistol grip, the trigger guard with a bent front edge and the fore-gun constitute a solid one-piece body, made of reinforced plastic. The telescoping stock is fitted with a hinged plastic shoulder rest- The vertical position of the shoulder rest is for resting the stock against the shoulder, and the horizontal position is for supporting the stock with forearm.
The submachine gun is earned on a sling, attached to the stock swivel.
A sleeve for attaching a muzzle suppressor, weighting up to 0.25 kg, is mounted on the front part of the receiver and the muzzle. The muzzle suppressor ensures comfortable firing inside buildings and concealment of the shooter, as it suppresses the flash and the report, thus, making it difficult for the enemy to detect the shooter.
In addition to that, the submachine gun may be fitted with a rail for a collimator sight and a laser target designator.
Fseldstripped АЕК-919К submachine gun: 1 - sleeve; 2 — receiver with the slock; 3 — muzzle suppressor; 4 — barrel; 5 — bolt with the recort mecnanasm; 6 — pistol grep; 7 — trigger assembly; 8 — magazines.
