    The USSR undertook a deep modernisation of the GP-25 in the late 1980s The objective was to reduce the weight of the grenade launcher. As a result, TsKIB SOO developed the new GP-30 grenade launcher to replace the GP-25 in 1989. The new grenade launcher was put into production at TsKIB SOO in the mid 1990s.
     The GP-30 is significantly lighter (by 0.3 kg) and shorter than its predecessor. A rudimentary sight is mounted on the right side of the grenade launcher, which has made curved fire aiming easier. There is no body frame, and the trigger assembly is modified as well. The ballistics have remained intact.

    The GP-30M model, which can be mounted on various automatic and assault rifles, is designed to be used with NATO-standard small arms.
The GP-30 operation showed the need for certain improvements. At the request of the Russian Ministry of Interior TsKSB SOO developed the upgraded GP-30M version in the Sate 2000s. The improvements were primarily introduced into the barrel (it became a one-piece unit), the push-rod ejector and the trigger assembly.
